BLURB–The Child Bride
In 1985 – exactly forty years ago – a 15- year- old girl from Sabie, a small town in Mpumalanga, became part of the ever- growing global statistic of child marriages. Her heart- rending story began with a dubious prophesy imparted to the girl’ s mother by a church elder, which revealed that God had chosen her only daughter to be a second wife to a man old enough to be her father.
The series of events that ensued catapulted the girl’ s life into six years of sexual and emotional abuse, depression, grief, shattered dreams, recurring suicidal thoughts, and a lifetime of trauma. This also resulted in four children being born of the marriage – four children who ultimately spurred not only her survival, but also her escape from the clutches of what had become a dark abyss that she previously had lost all hope of ever overcoming.
Determined to reclaim her life and find her voice, she fled from her ‘ marital home’ and went back to school, became a chartered accountant and obtained an MBA. Four decades later, the girl who was once the epitome of shattered dreams and deferred destiny has held executive roles in a number of prestigious corporate firms, amongst them PwC, Transnet, SARS, and MTN South Africa.
The Child Bride: From Captive To Courageous is Mmathabo Sukati’ s real- life account of resilience against all odds, of hope in the midst of hopelessness, of forgiveness, and of the unconquerable human spirit. It serves as a testament to the metamorphic power of faith and trust in The Living God. It is a tangible demonstration of how personal tragedy and adversity can be a catalyst for growth, resilience and strength.
